But instead of showing you more staple layers, just imagine that we went through about 5 more layers and we lived to tell the tale. :) So what I finally ended up with is the following where the fabric is ready for removal.
So it's been a while since I first started working on the bench. As it turns out, there were a lot of staples to remove and when I finished what I thought was the final layer of staples, more appeared. The upholstery job was definitely done for the long haul! After removing all the staples, David and I were both kind of scared of tackling the second bench. :D But instead of showing you more staple layers, just imagine that we went through about 5 more layers and we lived to tell the tale. :) So what I finally ended up with is the following where the fabric is ready for removal. When I removed the upholstery fabric, I found this interesting cotton-like material underneath. It was actually quite gross. It felt like really thick lint out of the dryer in that it sort of separates as you tug at it. Except it was not warm and did not smell nice. Gross. I peeled back layers of this material to finally uncover the foam underneath. I know the best practice usually is to purchase new foam and replace the old one. But I was too lazy/cheap to do that so I left it in place. The foam was still in serviceable condition and it wasn't worth it to me to tackle it on. So what I did was staple on a layer of new 1/2" batting over the foam. The batting layer helps protect the shape and durability of the foam. It also adds a nice soft layer so it's easier on the bottom at the end. So that's it for now. Next up is covering buttons. :) I have 7 of them to cover for this bench.
