This is a 10 minute project. First, tape off a section of the wooden disk. Washi tape is perfect for this project because it peels off easily!
A few days ago, I was putting some things away in my craft bin when I found some wooden disks! I had looked for these about a year ago and just could not find them. They're about the size of a button so they're small. Serendipitously, I also found some loose magnets in the same bin! It was clearly meant to be crafting time, so I put down what I was doing and set out to make colorblock magnets. This is a 10 minute project. First, tape off a section of the wooden disk. Washi tape is perfect for this project because it peels off easily! Then, paint the wood with craft paint and immediately peel off the tape to get a clean line. Finally, glue the magnet on the backside and you are done! Let the glue sit for about a day and it should be good to go. This is such an easy and fun project. :) By the way, the gold craft paint looks gorgeous against the wood.

I downloaded the Waterlogue app yesterday and I am beyond impressed with it! Waterlogue basically takes a photo and turns it into a watercolor. Take the photo I posted yesterday of the boutonierres, for example. This is what it looks like after Waterlogue finished "painting" it! Amazing, right? After trying several types of photos, I think the app does better with nature than with portraits. In fact, I've been thoroughly impressed with all the photos I've inputed that doesn't contain people. And the coolest thing of all? I downloaded the painted watercolor of the bike photo below and printed it out and framed it. It took all of 2 minutes. :)
We had a wedding last week at Pacifica Church and I was asked to make boutonierres for the wedding workers. The bride wanted something green and white, clean and fresh, so I ended up buying white tulips, wax flowers and green berries. I thought the color combination look modern and nice with brown floral tape so I went with that. The tulips stayed closed in the fridge overnight but by the middle of the day they were completely open. Oh well. Nothing wrong with one outfit, two looks, right? When we were done making the boutonierres, we had a bunch of wax flowers and green berries left over, so I brought them home. They sat in the garage for a while and I was thinking, why not just put them in vases around the house? So that's what I did. Pretty soon we had vases of wax flowers and / or green berries all over the house. I felt a bit genius for remembering we had this bud vase so I could stick all the leftover cuttings in it. It actually looked really pretty and it was effortless. Glad I didn't just let these flowers die in the garage. I never realized these flowers are so hardy. The wax flowers are still blooming and it's been a almost two weeks since I bought them!
So, one of my goals for 2013 was to clean the garage. As you can see below, we barely had a walkway to the house from the garage. This was the dumping ground of all the things that don't quite fit in the house. I also clearly order too many things from Amazon and Target. We got these 4 wooden shelves like 2 years ago from Ikea for $10 bucks each! They were much needed as verticle space storage, but let's just say we didn't make the best use of them. Things were put in the shelves with little to no rhyme or reason. The white bookcase next to the shelf was also a dumping ground for all the little knick knacks we have. I frankly don't know exactly what we put in there, except that I always am searching there for screwdrivers, tape, screws and other things. On the other side of the garage we have boxes, a wire shelf, some rugs and our bikes. We have bike gear, household goods (like paper towels, lysol wipes, kleenix tissues, etc), chairs, fans and chicken broth(!). And our laundry corner is also quite depressing. You can't see this, but the detergent is on the floor. Space is also so tight that we have to shimmy ourselves (holding a laundry basket, no less) to get to the machines. Well, that was all very depressing to share and type out, which is why I didn't want to put it out there until we had some progress to share as well! Here is what the garage looks like today! I know, i know. It's not "done" or "pretty", but it is good progress. There is now a lane wide enough for two people to walk into the house at the same time! *gasp!* The verticle shelves are better utilized now.
The white bookcase to the left of the shelves also got organized. I had gotten a bunch of yweave-baskets from Target since they were 50% off after the holidays. I got some white ones for the shelves above, but for the white bookcase, I thought blue would be fun. These bins hold our most used hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers). We also put things we use the most in various bins, making it less frustrating when we are in the middle of something. I want to add a pegboard above the white bookcase to hang the hammer & mallet. This picture below probably makes me the happiest! A clean and spacious entrance to the house! No more shimmying our way to the washer/dryer! This does make me want to change out the rugs, though! #yourdaysarenumbered! We have another white bookcase (which was buried somewhere in the middle of everything). We moved it next to the washer/dryer so now we have a place to store laundry things! We need to get a wastebasket to replace the paper bag there. And oh, the stool -- the bane of my reupholstery existence. #crysalittle David moved all the boxes to a corner and it does feel much cleaner. Although I think we'll probably eventually stack all the boxes together against the wall to clear out the middle a bit more. And I fantasize about making sliding panels to cover up the boxes. :) A girl can dream right? :) I also horde my free/cheap CLchairs in the garage and they're just hanging out in the middle. It may be time to finally part with them somehow (sell on CL or donate to Goodwill if we're lazy). I also need to figure out how to store our bakeware properly. One wonders if they can find a home in the kitchen somehow. :) I gotta thank David for this post because I woke up one morning to a clean garage! David apparently got up in the middle of the night at the beckoning of the organization fairies to get this done.
I do hope there will be a second garage cleaning post because here are things I'd like to still do:
But for now, walking through the garage no longer reminds me of my long overdue goal. Walking through a clean space makes coming home that much nicer. Happy winter cleaning, everyone. :) |
