The book is written by a doctor who has devoted much of his life to treating leprosy patients. He pioneered the thought that leprosy is a disease that is propelled by the absence of pain. That lepers destroy their own bodies (biting off their own fingers or putting their hand in fire, for example) because they don't feel any pain. And because of that lack of pain, they have no predisposition for self-preservation. So many lepers end up with amputated limbs or disfigurement as a result.
I wasn't sure what to expect before I read the book. I wasn't sure if it'll be a gruesome tale or simply a sad story. But it has been sort of both and more. David and I both finished the first chapter earlier this week and I have to say that I already feel differently - much more appreciative - about having pain and suffering in my life.
