So yesterday I covered the foam with batting and I'm officially ready to start working with the new fabric. Since this is a tufted bench, there will obviously be buttons. So for my tufting design, I would need 7 buttons. I got a few button kits from Joann. The kit came with everything below except for the pen. The larger white circle is a paper template of how large I should cut my fabric for each button. The silicon white thing and the blue thing are part of the button covering kit (will show you later how they work). And I got this fancy disappearing ink pen so I can draw on the fabric and it would disappear later. :) Works really well! So after I cut out 7 fabric circles using the template, I was ready to use the kit. First you lay the white silicone piece on a sturdy surface. Then you lay a piece of fabric on top of it, making sure to center it around the cavity. Then use the flat side of the blue piece to press it into the cavity of the white piece. i used a nice heavy ceramic mug to help me do the pressing. After the fabric is nested in the cavity, take one of the rounded pieces of the button kit and nest it in the cavity on top of the fabric like so. Press the rounded piece in so it fits snugly in the cavity. After the rounded piece is securely nested in the groove, fold the excess fabric into the cavity so it covers the inside of the rounded piece. Then take the bottom piece of the button and lay it on top of the excess fabric, making sure to cover all the fabric so no fraying edge is exposed. Finally, using blue tool again this time cavity side down, press the bottom piece of the button into the groove. Please don't do this with your fingers! Put something heavy (like a mug) on top of the blue tool then press down firmly. And that's it! Here's what their undersides should look like. Flip them over and here they are nicely covered. I didn't take care to make sure there were no creases but it didn't bother me. If you were more careful, you can probably ensure your buttons are crease-free. And here's a rough idea of where I want them to be on the bench. :) Of course I'll have to do some measuring to figure out exactly where everyone will go.
